Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
