Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
