Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Officers say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then found many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis show the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.
An important official said the attack left him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the death of nine victims by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
